Trains to and from Verona Airport (VRN)

Getting To Verona Airport By Train

There is no train station at the airport itself, but a convenient Aerobus shuttle runs at 20 minute intervals between the main train station in Verona and the airport from 6.10 am onwards until 11.10 pm at night. From the city centre it’s just a 20 minute walk to Verona Porta Nova train station, from where high speed Eurostar Italy, Inter City and regional trains leave for all parts of the Verona region and the rest of the country.

Train times and cost of fares can be found on the main website dealing with Italian railways, namely at http://www.trentitalia.com. It is also possible to book tickets in advance via this portal.

Great savings can be found with Super economy, Family and Economy tickets, while Base tickets offer the greatest flexibility of travel but are far more expensive. Families can save between 20% and 50% with a family ticket that allows groups of two to five passengers to travel together.

Although direct Verona Airport trains are not covering the stretch to Verona Porta Nova railway station, the fast and efficient Aerobus service is a good alternative. Verona’s main railway station connects to favourite Italian holiday destinations like Rome, Pisa and Florence via Bologna. Passengers pay seat reservation fees for fast Inter City trains, but for regional train connections there is no requirement to reserved seats in advance. On IC trains the reservation fee costs EUR 3.00, while on Eurostar Italy trains reservation fees costs EUR 10.00 per person.

Had there been trains at Verona Villafranca Airport, they might have travelled directly to Venice, Milan or Bolzano in the Alps, but so far the small regional airport has managed to cater quite well for increasing air passenger numbers with bus, coach and car rental transportation.

Travelling from Verona Porto Nova to Venice Santa Lucia train station for example takes 1 hour and 38 minutes on regional trains and just 1 hour 11 minutes with Frecciabianca trains (white trains). Return ticket prices start from EUR 9.00, but are typically around EUR 19.00 for a return fare for one adult passenger travelling mid-morning or mid-afternoon.

Travelling from Verona Porto Nova train station to Milan will take 1 hour and 23 minutes with Frecciabianca trains and prices start at EUR 19.00 for a return fare for an adult passenger. With saver tickets bought well in advance this journey can cost as little as EUR 9.00 return.

A train journey from Verona Porto Nova train station to Roma Termini via Padova, where trains need to be changed, will take 4 hours and 20 minutes to complete. Prices for a return fare to Rome start at EUR 38.00 per person. Both Frecciabianca and Frecciargento trains (silver coloured trains) cover the rail network to Rome. Travelling via Bologna Centrale railway station reduces the journey time to 4 hours and 14 minutes at a cost of EUR 48.00 per person for a return fare. The same journey undertaken via Milan will take 5 hours and 12 minutes.

For passengers who travel often the Carnet ticket is ideal as 10 railway journeys with either first or second class seating can be covered at a 20% discount. Travel agencies sell these tickets, but they are only available to passengers who already hold a Cartaviaggio or Cartafreccia card (for which passengers can apply free of charge).

Unless passenger numbers to Verona Villafranca Airport change drastically in the near future, there will be little need to build a railway station or metro line at the airport. While direct connections via trains at Verona Airport would undoubtedly benefit tourists, the current economic climate in the Eurozone countries makes it unlikely that such a costly undertaking will take place any time soon.
